Jags Awarded Shuler
The Jaguars didn’t make as many moves as pundits expected on the waiver wire but they did attempt to strengthen their tight end corps by claiming former Falcons tight end Mickey Shuler. Shuler was mostly a blocking tight end at Penn State before being selected in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2010 draft.
Shuler spent last season on the Falcons practice squad before being waived on Saturday.
The Jaguars had a solid look at Shuler through his limited appearances on HBO’s Hard Knocks and the team’s final preseason game against the Falcons where the 6-foot-4, 247 pound tight end didn’t catch a pass.
To make room for Shuler the Jaguars waived tight end Marcel Jensen.
Stupar Gets Claimed By Falcons
A sign of a building roster is when the players you let go get picked up by other teams. The Jaguars had that happen as linebacker Nate Stupar was signed by the Atlanta Falcons.
Stupar struggled at middle linebacker during preseason but was a very good special teams player. With the Falcons in need of warm bodies at linebacker, they had a good last look at Stupar as he had three tackles, one tackle for loss and a quarterback hit in the Jaguars preseason finale against Atlanta.
Jags Sign 7 To Practice Squad
The Jaguars began to fill out their practice squad roster as they have signed seven players, six of which were with the team during preseason. The biggest name on the practice squad roster is quarterback Stephen Morris, who struggled mightily with accuracy and progressions during preseason. Other players making the squad and earning the minimum $6300/week salary are offensive lineman Cody Booth, wide receiver Kerry Taylor, defensive tackle Deandre Coleman, linebacker Marcus Whitfield and the lone player that wasn’t with the team in preseason, wide receiver Tony Washington.
Washington worked with the Colts this preseason after going undrafted from Appalachian State. The 5-foot-11, 198 pound receiver could be called upon by the team down the road as a kick returner as he finished nationally ranked in both kickoff and punt returns in college.
The team has three remaining practice squad spots if they choose to use them.
