To Sign, Or Not To Sign

With one day left before the official beginning of training camp, the Jaguars top two draft choices remain unsigned. JagNation received a tip from a source inside of Jacksonville Municipal Stadium...

Negotiations don't seem promising for the Jaguars second-round pick, Justin Durant. Our source claims that negotiations became very heated last night between Paul Vance, the Jaguars "cap guy", and Durant's agent, Adisa Bakari. Vance was adamant that he felt that Bakari was asking for more money than was appropriate for the slot his client was drafted in. Although regarding these types of negotiations, any situation can change with the ring of a cell phone, it certainly appears that at this moment, Durant and the Jaguars seem to be at somewhat of an impasse.

The Jaguars can afford to play a little more "hardball" with Durant being that he is a second-round pick who the team is really not counting on to play a great deal in ‘07, at least at his natural linebacker position. Durant was drafted to be the eventual successor to Mike Peterson, and is supposed to play mostly on special teams in ‘07.

It appears to be a different story for the Jaguars first-round pick. According to Adam Caplan of scout.com, representatives for former University of Florida safety Reggie Nelson have told us negotiations with the Jacksonvile Jaguars have been positive and they feel a deal could be struck soon.

So who really has the leverage in this negotiation? Common knowledge would say that Nelson has had a slight upper hand ever since the Jaguars decision to release long-time Jaguars safety, Donovin Darius back in June. Nelson will likely be the opening day starter assuming he stays healthy once he signs. However, when push comes to shove, Nelson must either sign with the Jaguars or sit out a large portion of camp, and/or the season. Nelson will then be labeled as a malcontent, and garner the reputation of someone difficult to work with. No one in either party wants that.
