Jaguars Walking Wounded

JagNation takes a look at the injury-list for the Jaguars.

According to head coach Jack Del Rio, Defensive end Reggie Hayward (Achilles) has not been cleared to practice and will be reevaluated before Friday. Del Rio said tight end George Wrighster (labrum) and rookie defensive end Brian Smith (hip) are not likely to be medically cleared before the start of camp, and quarterback Quinn Gray could begin training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list due to a sprained ankle he recently sustained.

Commentary: It's not much of a surprise that Hayward isn't ready to go. A ruptured Achilles can sometimes be a two-year injury, and the Jaguars have to deal with the realization that Hayward may not be able to go at all this year, and if he can go, he will almost certainly not be nearly as explosive.

Reports are surfacing that the front office is growing weary of George Wrighster seemingly always being nicked up. Wrighster has had a history of back issues and this labrum is just another on a long list. In my opinion, Wrighster will likely find a spot on the Jaguars roster this season, due to a lack of depth and talent at tight end.

Quinn Gray's ankle injury will likely derail his attempt to take over the backup quarterback job from David Garrard. Gray has looked very good in his small cameos of playing time over his career, but he has continued to struggle in practice and has never unseated Garrard for his job. If the Jaguars knew that he would be injured right before camp, they would likely have not placed the second-round tender on him and paid him a salary of $1.2 million for ‘07. Taking into account the noise he made when his tender was placed on him as well as this injury, it is very likely that 2007 will be the final season for Gray on the Jaguars roster.
