Jaguars Moving On

The Jaguars are moving forward with David Garrard at quarterback, and former starting quarterback Byron Leftwich will soon be released or traded. This move comes off the heels of Garrard's strong preseason, in which he torched second string defenses, while Leftwich struggled mightily in his last two outings.

We at JagNation understand the switch, but question the timing. If they were going to move on with Garrard, the move should have been made back in February. That would've given Garrard time to adjust to playing with the number ones, and a much greater opportunity to get compensation for Leftwich.

Another possibility for the Jaguars would have been to draft Brady Quinn, who they passed on twice. If the Jaguars had drafted Quinn, they would have a number one quarterback in training, and their eggs wouldn't be completely in the Garrard basket. Another possibility would have been for the Jaguars to sign a veteran quarterback in case Garrard didn't work out.

David Garrard has played well in spots, and played not so well in spots, but from here on out, he will be the guy in Jacksonville. Whereas we at JagNation don't agree with this move, especially the timing of it, we understand the similarity in results between Garrard and Leftwich. The deciding factor may have been the salary numbers. Byron Leftwich was due to earn nearly five times as much money as David Garrard, and he isn't five times more effective.
