Hot topics facing the Jacksonville Jaguars this week

HOT TOPIC

The Jaguars made three critical changes in their offensive coaching staff during the offseason in an attempt to add more punch to their offense.

They fired offensive coordinator Carl Smith, quarterback coach Ken Anderson and wide receiver coach Steve Walters and replaced them with Dirk Koetter, Mike Shula and Todd Monken.

But the Jaguars' production is actually down after two games.

Last year, they started off 2-0 and scored 33 points in the first two games. This year, they're 1-1 and have scored just 23 points.

And they're having trouble scoring even though quarterback David Garrard is off to a good start. He passed for 272 yards and had a 117.4 quarterback rating.

One problem is that the running game hasn't been as effective as it was last year when the Jaguars ranked fourth in the league in rushing although they also started off slowly last year.

They had 188 yards rushing in the first two games last year, the same figure they have this year although this year's figure is somewhat skewed by David Garrard's 44 yards rushing. Last year, Byron Leftwich had just 11 yards rushing in the first two games.

The strange thing is that Garrard is playing well and yet the team is having trouble scoring, but Del Rio wasn't eager to discuss that topic.

"I really don't feel the need to sit here and try to explain anything to you as far as that goes. We're doing our best to be a good football tem and there are some areas that we need to be better in and we're going to continue to work at it," he said.

As the Jaguars prepare to go to Denver Sunday, they need to find a way to get more points on the board.

PLAYER NOTES

  • QB David Garrard is off to a good start with a 101.8 quarterback rating after two games. He has completed 61.8 percent of his passes and has two touchdown passes and no interceptions.

  • RB Fred Taylor is off to a slow start with only 72 yards in 22 carries. They've yet to get the running game cranked up.

  • TE Marcedes Lewis, who had only 13 catches his first season, has six in the first two games.

  • WR Dennis Northcutt, a free agent acquisition, is leading the team with nine receptions for 132 yards.

  • WR Matt   Jones has just three catches in the first two games -- all in the second game -- and coach Jack Del Rio has publicly criticized his demeanor on the field. He doesn't show much hustle and often jogs on plays in which he's not involved.

  • MLB Mike Peterson had seven tackles, two sacks and one pass defensed against the Falcons.

  • S Gerald Sensabaugh will probably undergo shoulder surgery and be lost for the year.

  • DT Marcus Stroud, who's fighting to come back from microfracture surgery on his ankle, had five tackles and a sack against Atlanta. He's had a sack in each of the first two games although the first one against the Titans was against Kerry Collins.

  • K John Carney, signed to replace ailing Josh Scobee, had field goals of 35 and 27 yards to provide the winning margin against the Falcons.

  • P Adam Podlesh averaged only 33.5 yards in four punts against the Falcons.
