Stroud Suspension Looms

According to Michael Wright of the Florida Times-Union, Jaguars defensive tackle and three-time Pro Bowler Marcus Stroud is about to be suspended by the NFL for four games for violating the NFL's steroids and related substances policy.

According to a league source, Stroud tested positive for taking some "supplements," and Stroud is not likely to appeal the suspension.

It seems likely that the Jaguars have been aware of this impending suspension for at least a few days, as they came to terms with free agent defensive tackle, Grady Jackson yesterday. Jackson is expected to see significant playing time from here on out, and could certainly lessen the blow dealt by losing a player of Stroud's caliber.

The Jaguars had to deal with the absence of Stroud last year as he was nursing various ankle and knee injuries, which caused him to miss five games in October and November. The Jaguars went 3-2 in that stretch, with victories over the playoff bound Jets and Eagles.

Although Stroud's departure is likely to be felt by the team, he hasn't been playing at the level he was of a few years ago, prior to his injuries. The Jaguars will likely implement a rotation of John Henderson, Rob Meier, Grady Jackson, and Derek Landri, with Meier and Landri playing often in passing situations.

The next four games that Stroud is likely to miss will be at New Orleans, at Tennessee, home vs. San Diego, and home vs. Buffalo. Stroud's first game back would be at Indianapolis. If the Jaguars can split the four games that Stroud misses, that would leave them with a record of 7-4, which would most likely keep them in the hunt for an AFC wildcard spot.
