Jaguars Interest in Eugene Wilson

Following a busy first two days of free agency in which the Jaguars spent nearly $25 million in guaranteed money on wide receiver Jerry Porter, cornerback Drayton Florence, and quarterback Cleo Lemon, the Jaguars may not be finished purging their accounts.

With safety Madieu Williams escaping to Minnesota, and safety Gibril Wilson signing a "giant-sized" contract with Oakland, Jacksonville appeared to be out of luck in the very thin free agent safety market.

We have now received reports that the Jaguars are talking with former New England Patriot safety, Eugene Wilson. Jacksonville is one of six teams that may be vying for Wilson's services, along with Miami, Tennessee, the New York Giants, Seattle, and Tampa Bay.

At this point in his career Wilson is a pretty average player. He is 5'10", 195 lbs., and has 10 interceptions in his five year career, all with New England. Wilson is a sure tackler from the safety position, and is an average defender against the pass. Most teams targeted his teammate, safety Rodney Harrison when attacking the Patriots defense through the air. New England likely let Wilson hit the open market due to their selection of Brandon Meriweather in the first-round of last April's draft.

If the Jaguars are to strike a deal with Wilson, he will likely compete with Gerald Sensabaugh for the starting safety position opposite Reggie Nelson. Wilson would also be able to contribute on special teams. If Wilson gets inked in Jacksonville, we will bring you a full scouting report as soon as the deal is done.
