Maurice Williams Discusses His Situation

"All of a sudden you're not the starter anymore. But as you sort through your emotions and your feelings, you recognize that you are a good football player and to not get down on yourself. Opportunity will come again and it came at right guard for me last year."

After exploring opportunities with several other NFL clubs, Maurice Williams decided to stay put with the Jaguars, re-signing with the club last week. Williams said he got paid a little more money to stay in Jacksonville and is happy that it worked out this way.

"We've been here seven years now and have kind of grown up in the city of Jacksonville," the former Michigan standout said. "Jacksonville has been great to us, knowing we have a home here and looking to retire here. It does add to a lot of factors.

"Jacksonville is a good team. We have David Garrard and the new guys they just picked up in free agency. I think the sky is the limit for what this team can do and another part is my aspiration to win a ring."

There was speculation that Williams would depart the first chance he had after having started 64 consecutive games at right tackle only to have the team pursue and sign former Baltimore tackle Tony Pashos a year ago at this time and promptly name him the starter at Williams' former spot. Williams did get 12 starts with the Jaguars this past season, but only because guard Chris Naeole went out with a season-ending injury.

Naeole has since been released by the club, but Williams knows that doesn't guarantee that he'll be the starter at that spot this year.

"I will have to talk with Jack (Del Rio) about it for the full details," he said. I remember earlier talks in the year with him and he liked how I played at right guard during the course of the season. That is what I am assuming going in, but he might have other plans for me.

"Whatever role they have for me, I am just looking forward to coming in and helping the offense."
