New Jaguar Profile: Alex Boston

Alex Boston (Florida State University)

The Jaguars front office was much busier following the actual draft than they while the selections were being made, as they signed 13 free agents. As always, JagNation will deliver the complete scouting reports on these lesser known, newest Jaguars, and what their chances are of finding a roster spot in Jacksonville. JagNation welcomes Alex Boston to Jacksonville.

The Jaguars primary concern entering the weekend was to get some help in their pass rush, and they believe that they accomplished that by trading up in the first and second-rounds to select former University of Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey, as well as Auburn University defensive end Quentin Groves. The Jaguars added another much less touted end in the free agent ranks as they signed former Florida State University Seminole, Alex Boston.

Alex Boston measures in at a little taller than 6'2", 261 lbs., and ran the 40-yard dash as low as 4.76 seconds. Although Boston has great workout speed, it doesn't translate to the field, as he wasn't a fantastic edge rusher.

The Jaguars hope that Boston can follow the suit of many former Florida State Seminoles, who become much better players in the pros than they were while wearing the garnet and gold.

Scout.com NFL Draft Expert and former scout Tom Marino has a short take about Alex Boston—

Not the typical FSU defensive lineman that we have come to know over the years. Doesn't get off blocks or get to the ball. Is undersized and marginal in every skill area. Questionable to bring to camp as a free agent.

Does Boston have a chance to make the Jaguars roster? It's a longshot. With Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves occupying two roster spots, as well as the return of starters Paul Spicer and Reggie Hayward, there leaves just one or two spots for Brent Hawkins, Jeremy Mincey, James Wyche, Kenny Pettway, and Alex Boston. He will have to play the best football of his life to get noticed in this group.
