Jaguars Pick Up Another Big, Strong Receiver

Jacksonville addressed their wide receiver position early on in free agency as they signed former Oakland Raider Jerry Porter, and traded for former first-round pick Troy Williamson, in hopes that these two will offer more competition and a legitimate deep threat to an offense that wasn’t considered explosive through the air. The Jaguars didn’t draft any additional help on the outside, but they signed former University of Houston wide receiver Jeron Harvey.

Jeron Harvey fits the mold of many of the Jaguars big, strong wide receivers at he stands 6'5" tall and weighs 215 lbs. The former Houston Cougar isn’t as speedy as some of the Jaguars current corps of wideouts as his low time in the 40 is 4.49, but he is tall, lean, and muscular, and he’s a big, physical target with very good hands. He is a smooth runner who is durable and excels in double-moves.

Some of Harvey’s negative attributes include a lack of suddenness, an ability to be rerouted while running routes, and a lack of aggression on balls over the middle.

Does Harvey have a chance to make the Jaguars final roster? Odds are slim. Last season, Jacksonville kept just five wide receivers, and this year they have Jerry Porter, Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt, Mike Walker, John Broussard, Matt Jones, and Troy Williamson all vying for roster positions with Jeron Harvey. Harvey isn’t known for any kind of special teams contribution, and without that, things will be difficult for him.
