The Jaguars will work on settling the secondary issues, picking the wideouts, and deciding who will…
Jones Still A Jaguar?
To put it simply, if Jones were a better football player, there wouldn't be nearly as much sentiment for the Jaguars to release him. If Jones put forth more effort on the field, he would be allotted more room for an off the field indiscretion.
One of the Jaguars most articulate players, right tackle Tony Pashos talked about Matt Jones during a Sirius NFL Radio interview. When asked if Jones had the desire to be a professional football player, this was Pashos response—
"I don't know (if he has the fire and desire). I've seen him in the offseason and he's working hard. He's there with us, but it's tough to say. Until you put pads on and play in the games, it's really hard to evaluate that especially since there's so many of those wide receivers doing so good. He needs to answer that on his own, he needs to deep down answer that on his own."
Even if Jones didn't get arrested last week, it wasn't likely that he'd make the Jaguars roster in 2008. The acquisitions of Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson have added some much needed competition to a very average wide receiver corps, and Jones would've had to have shined in training camp to even be considered for a spot among this group. Tony Pashos, along with the rest of the team seemed thoroughly impressed with the team's pass catching group—
"Oh my God, they are going to have some tough decisions to make at the end of training camp because those guys looked amazing in minicamp," exclaimed the Jaguars right tackle. "Jerry looked great until he got dinged up; Troy Williamson- for a couple weeks straight he was tearing up practice, looking amazing. Mike Walker who didn't play last year because of an injury- he came out there and looked sweet. We still have Reggie and Dennis and all the other guys that are still on the roster so it's going to be tough decision for the coaches. The high caliber of the competition is going to bring out the best in each player at the position."
Tight end Marcedes Lewis was also impressed with the Jaguars new acquisitions—
"From what I've seen these guys are amazing. First of all, Jerry Porter has some of the best hands that I've seen. He's only 6'3" or 6'4", but his hands are as big as mine, and I'm 6'7.5". The way he goes up and catches the ball is great. Williamson is just blazin'. I've never seen anyone that's so smooth and so fast, it's ridiculous. I was just like wow! We're going to be a force to be reckoned with."
With the new additions on the receiving corps, as well as the black eye on the organization that Matt Jones now represents, it is only a matter of time before the Jaguars part ways with the troubled receiver. If the organization makes the decision prior to next Saturday's beginning of training camp, it will allow the players and coaches to put the distraction behind them and concentrate completely on the job at hand, winning a division title.
A perfect time would be near the close of business today, Friday, July 18th, as it would alleviate some of the media attention by letting thing cools over the weekend before training camp.
We hear Matt Jones is in the building, perhaps for the last time.
