Jaguars Ready for Backup

The Jaguars suffered their first major injury of training camp as Brad Meester strained his right biceps. The injury apparently came during Sunday's practice session, and Monday evening's practice was the first that Meester missed.

As for prognostication about how much time the Jaguars starting center will miss, it remains unclear.

"We're still trying to determine how long he may be out," said Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.

The most likely replacement for Meester is Dennis Norman, the Jaguars talented backup offensive lineman that can literally play anywhere on the line. Norman filled in for Meester in two of the last three years when he went down with various injuries, including a torn biceps and an injured ankle.

"That's what you have to do," Del Rio said. "Nobody in this league is going to feel sorry for you. The next guy gets an opportunity, and we expect him to step in and play well."

Another possible fill-in could be second-year pro Uche Nwaneri, who played all three interior line positions while in college. Nwaneri saw some time in the preseason of his rookie season at center and played very well. Nwaneri is currently competing with Maurice Williams for the Jaguars starting job at left guard.

Injuries are never good for NFL teams, but it helps in the sense that it prepares the backups for real game action. It will be interesting to see how quickly Nwaneri gets thrown into the mix at the center position.
