Undrafted Rookies Making Their Mark

Harvey (JagNation.com)

The rate of undrafted rookies making an NFL roster is approximately 2-3%. For every Jeff Saturday, Jason Peters, or Montell Owens, there are hundreds of Roosevelt Kiser, Tony Pudewell, and Woody Dantzler's. The percentages become even lower when an undrafted rookie is trying to earn a spot on a playoff team and Super Bowl contender like Jacksonville.

The Jaguars signed 13 undrafted free agent rookies prior to training camp, and many of the players that are left have a legitimate chance of earning a roster spot. We are now going to track the progress of the Jaguars undrafted free agent rookies roughly one week into training camp.

TE Adam Bishop, Nevada- Adam Bishop didn't quite make it to camp, as the Jaguars waived him a day before training camp began.

DE Alex Boston, FSU-
Boston has looked better than most thought he would, but there seems to be too much competition at the defensive end spot. Boston has an outside shot at the practice squad.

TE Chris Brown, Tennessee-
Brown is a big, physical H-back, but he hasn't really stood out in camp. Practice squad is a remote possibility; active roster is a major longshot.

FB Anthony Cotrone, Maine-
Cotrone was having a very strong camp before injuring his leg during Friday night's scrimmage. It hasn't been revealed as to the extent of the injury, but it looked very serious. PS was likely a given, active roster was a possibility.

WR Clyde Edwards, Grambling-
Edwards has shown a solid set of hands, but hasn't really stood out in a position where he needs to stand out. PS is a remote possibility.

CB Isaiah Gardner, Maryland- Gardner has been very solid and physical, and could possibly play either corner or safety. At this point, Gardner has a real shot at earning a roster spot.

CB Michael Grant, Indiana- Grant has opened some eyes in camp, as he like Gardner is also a candidate for a possible move to safety. Don't be surprised if Grant earns a roster spot.

WR Jeron Harvey, Houston- The Jacksonville native is an Ernest Wilford clone, and has made several difficult catches in camp. Harvey is probably not ready for the active roster, but could be a PS candidate.

DT Theo Horrocks, Vanderbilt- Horrocks is still trying to find his way in Jaguars camp, as he is talented, but seems to be getting pushed around too often. He will have to make his mark in the preseason if he's going to earn a roster spot, or even a PS position.

C Drew Miller, UF-
Miller may be the biggest undrafted surprise in camp, as he's looked strong and tough, and seems to fit in well. It will be interesting to see how he plays in the preseason, but at this point he's going to be a tough player for the team to cut especially considering the injury to Brad Meester.

LB Lamar Myles, Louisville- Myles has not stood out for anything positive at this point in camp, and with the very talented corps of linebackers that Jacksonville boasts, it will be difficult for him to make the roster. PS is a possibility.

QB Paul Smith, Tulsa- Smith didn't last a full week in training camp, but there's a slight possibility he could return on the Jaguars PS.

CB Brian Witherspoon, Stillman- Witherspoon has undeniable physical skills, and he's tough for a guy who isn't huge. ‘Spoon has a real shot of earning a roster spot, and in worst case, a spot on the PS.

RB Lavarus Giles, Miss. JUCO-
Giles is a big 230 lb. back who has a nice burst. The third RB spot will probably go to Chauncey Washington, but Giles has been playing well thus far.
