Who? Matt Jones

Matt Jones, the 2005 first-round pick who was a bust for his first three seasons, is finally making an impact.

He continued his fast start with five more catches against the Texans on Sunday, including a 24-yard catch in overtime on third-and-5 at the Jaguars 35 that kept the game-winning drive alive.

Jones became the first Jaguars receiver since Jimmy Smith in 2001 to have five-plus receptions in the first four games. He has 21 catches for 244 yards.

Jones is being helped by the fact he's never double-covered because opposing teams are concentrating on stopping the run.

Jones said of quarterback David Garrard, "He does a great job with 20- to 25-yard throws. He throws it right over the defensive back's head and puts it right in there. It was an easy catch."

Talking about Jones' improvement, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said, "Matt is acting like he cares, and he's applying himself."

The strong suggestion was that Jones didn't care in the past, which was his reputation. He never seemed that interested in playing football. But the thought that he could be cut this year may have motivated him.

Jones had a different explanation for his improved play.

"I'm getting to play a little bit (more) this year. It's no fun sitting on the sidelines. The games are a lot more fun when you're out there," he said.
