With the Jaguars struggling in pass defense (just 23rd overall in the league), and struggling to get to the passer, it is likely that the team will look for more depth in the secondary, among other places. Some of the numerous defensive prospects that will be on the field Saturday afternoon are Ole Miss safeties Kendrick Lewis and Jamarca Sanford, Alabama cornerback Javier Arenas, and Crimson Tide safeties Rashad Johnson and Justin Woodall.
Rashad Johnson - Alabama, FS, (Redshirt Sr.) 6’0”, 190 lbs., 4.40 40-yard dash. 2008 stats- 30 tackles, 8 pass breakups. The 2007 first team all-SEC performer’s draft stock is rising as he has been very solid in 2008. Johnson has great athleticism and is a playmaker with sideline to sideline ability. Currently an early second-day pick.
Justin Woodall - Alabama, SS, (Junior) 6’2”, 220 lbs. 4.49 40-yard dash. 2008 stats- 19 tackles, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, 5 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles. Great size to be an NFL strong safety and he may be good enough to play as a rookie. Woodall makes big plays and big hits. Currently an early second-day pick but rising.
Javier Arenas - Alabama, CB, (Junior) 5’9”, 198 lbs. 4.38 40-yard dash. 2008 stats- 25 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 INT, 3 pass breakups. One of the best kickoff and punt return men in college, Arenas is also a very solid corner. Has speed to burn but isn’t overly physical. Currently a late first-day pick.
Jamarca Sanford - Ole Miss, SS, (Redshirt Sr.) 5’10”, 200 lbs. 4.46 40-yard dash. 2008 stats- 56 tackles, 2 forced fumbles. Physical player for his size, active tackler, may need to switch to free safety on the next level. Currently a late-second day pick.
Kendrick Lewis - Ole Miss, FS (Junior) 5’11”, 192 lbs. 4.56 40-yard dash. 2008 stats- 45 tackles, 1 interception, 3 pass breakups, 1 fumble recovery. Former wide receiver would better be served to stay in school next season rather than enter the draft. He needs to get bigger and get a little faster, but has good instincts.
