Another Chance for Troy
Last season the Jaguars finally saw the emergence of Mike Sims-Walker as their potential number one wide receiver and during the pre-season, it looked like Troy Williamson was going to fit right in as the Jaguars number two. Williamson led all Jaguars receivers in the pre-season with 12 receptions for 267 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown reception against Tampa Bay. Williamson also shined all during training camp and it looked like the often drop-prone wide receiver might finally live up to his draft selection. Unfortunately for Williamson, his season in 2009 was cut short in week two when he suffered a torn labrum and was placed on injured reserve.
Williamson is only 26 years old and has a lot of football in front of him. He has one attribute that NFL teams covet at the wide receiver position: deep speed. If Williamson can stay healthy and continue on the pace he was on during the pre-season and at the start of the 2009 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars could have a legitimate wide receiving corps for the first time since 2001, Keenan McCardell's last season as a Jaguar. The re-signing of Williamson allows the Jaguars to keep second year receiver Mike Thomas as the third receiver, where he will play in the slot. This is where Thomas did most of his damage and where he will be the most effective. Williamson paired on the outside with Mike Sims-Walker gives the Jaguars two receivers who can both do a lot of the same things.
That said, the Jaguars wide receiving corps doesn't have much in the way of established stars so don't rule out the Jacksonville Jaguars targeting a receiver in free agency or early in April's draft.
