Tough Luck For Hughes
Former undrafted free agent wide receiver Nate Hughes seemed to have a lot of momentum heading into this year's training camp for the Jaguars after playing well in minicamp and OTA practices.
"I'm looking for a great season," Hughes said when asked about his level of excitement for this camp. "This is the most excited I've ever been entering a season."
Aspirations turned to disappointment when Hughes went up for an underthrown David Garrard pass on Tuesday and ended up coming down wrong on his shoulder. The result ended up being a torn labrum and on Sunday the team handed him his walking papers.
Prior to the injury, Nate Hughes was really beginning to find his way. Hughes was running good routes, was showing good hands in passing drills and his speed has never been a question. It really seemed as if it was all coming together for the former Alcorn State wideout.
"I feel really good both physically and mentally," Hughes said following the team's first practice. "I know a lot more than I did in previous years so I'm looking to compete and hopefully win me a job."
If Nate Hughes is going to win that elusive NFL receiver job it will have to wait until next season at the soonest. The odds will certainly be stacked against him as the former undrafted free agent has all of five career NFL catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Nate Hughes is the type of player that you can root for, a genuinely good-natured guy who is trying to realize his dream. Let's hope that dream didn't end for good last week.
