David Garrard hasn't had a proven talent at wide receiver in his time as the Jaguars' starter, but…
Jaguars Confidence Rating: Wide Receiver
There's an old saying I like to refer to this team a year; "The less questions you have about a team, the better they will probably be," or something like that. Of course, there are always teams that answer those questions (a la the 2007 Giants, who went from a mediocre team to Super Bowl champs.)While there are teams that will rise from the ashes, it's usually a safe bet to believe in a team that doesn't have any huge questions regarding key personnel, injuries and experience.
With all that in mind, the Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot of questions and "ifs" that must be worked out. They absolutely should not be ruled of contention before the season even begins, but a position-by-position breakdown reveals that there's an abundance of "ifs" an questions floating around out there. To further analyze how confidence fans should be of the team, we'll take a look at each position's positives, lingering questions and how the position should perform. We will follow this with an overall confidence level, running from 0-10, 10 being the highest. Today we'll hit on wide receivers.
Pressing Question: Will a Jaguars receiver give David Garrard his first true go-to guy during his tenure as a starter?
Breakdown: Out with the old and in with the new. The Jaguars let the troubled duo of Matt Jones and Reggie Williams go this offseason and also cut free-agent bust, Jerry Porter. Jacksonville also just traded Dennis Northcutt. To replace them, the team added Torry Holt in free agency and Jarett Dillard, Mike Thomas and Tiquan Underwood via the draft. Holt is expected to bring leadership and the rookies should add some speed that the team has lacked lately. Mike Walker is entering his third year and could be due for a breakout year.
The Big If: If Walker or a rookie can emerge as a consistent threat next to the elder Holt, then Jacksonville could potentially have its best one-two punch in years.
Our Call: The raw talent is there for the Jaguars but inexperience is a problem here. The point of this series is addressing "ifs" and there are too many players here that warrant a sentence about them to begin with "if they pan out…" so it's difficult to give the group a vote of confidence. Some guys like Walker can step up, but inexperience might lead to some frustrating moments.
Confident Level: 5
