Jaguars: Two More Down, Three To Go

The Jaguars came to terms Thursday with third-round pick, cornerback Derek Cox and seventh-round pick, wide receiver Tiquan Underwood. The team now has six of their nine draft picks signed with just their top three picks, Eugene Monroe, Eben Britton, and Terrence Knighton left to go.

The Jaguars are hoping to avoid the ugly mess that occurred last season when they couldn't come to terms with defensive end Derrick Harvey, the eighth overall pick in the 2008 draft. The mess that became the Harvey holdout was a sign of things to come as the Jaguars monumentally underachieved last year.

Last season, the "slotting system" which teams use to get their draft picks signed was thrown off-kilter as the Jets gave Vernon Gholston a contract that many thought was exorbitant. That contract moved the amounts of total money and guaranteed money up for Harvey and the Jaguars weren't immediately prepared to meet the new demands.

This year the Jaguars will be much better prepared to come to a deal with eighth-overall pick Eugene Monroe, mainly due to their experiences a season ago with Harvey. Although the majority of the first-round picks remain unsigned, seventh-overall draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey just inked a five-year deal reportedly worth upwards of $38 million with $23.5 million in guaranteed money. Last season, the Jaguars and Harvey finally agreed on a five-year, $30 million deal with approximately $18 million in guarantees.

If the slotting system holds true, Eugene Monroe should receive a five-year, $34-35 million deal with roughly $20 million in guarantees. The Jaguars endured a 23-day holdout a year ago for their top draft pick and as the team is due to report for training camp on Sunday, they hope to avoid a repeat of last summer's situation.
